Facebook is testing mid-roll video ads in Facebook Live

Facebook has started running tests of mid-roll video ads within live video broadcasts from top publishing partners. The ads are eligible to appear five minutes into a broadcast, and they last up to 15 seconds or shorter, according to one agency executive, who has discussed the ads with Facebook. Facebook is still in the testing phase with the Live commercials, and it is not certain that it will develop them into a full-fledged ad product, sources said.

Mobile drives strong online ad revenue growth

The Advertising Association/Warc Expenditure Report data reveals strong growth for mobile. Mobile is believed to have accounted for some 96 per cent of total internet growth, as mobile ad spend rose 55.9 per cent year-on-year to an estimated £830m during Q1 2016. Total internet ad spend for 2015 was £8.6bn. Of this, mobile accounted for £2.6bn, a 61.1 per cent increase on 2014’s total. In 2016, mobile is forecast to post a 39.3 per cent increase for a total of £3.7bn.

Apple is interested in augmented reality apps

Apple CEO Tim Cook brought attention to the company’s growing interest in the augmented reality (AR) space during Apple’s Q2 2016 (fiscal Q3 2016) earnings call last week. Addressing analysts, Cook mentioned that the company would be investing a lot in AR over the long run. Apple has made a number of investments in AR startups, including Metaio, Flyby Media, and Facelift, according to Digit.

App Annie adds Marketing Intelligence to its lineup

App Annie is expanding its portfolio with a new product “Marketing Intelligence” that focuses on marketing and advertising for apps. It offers weekly info on competitors’ marketing efforts — app discoverability in app stores, creatives used for in-app ads and ad campaigns’ timing, placement, partners, messaging, impressions by ad networks and results.

15% of smartphone users are blocking ads, but there are ways to win them back

C3Research among 1,300 computer and 201 mobile users in the US, finds that two-thirds of consumers using ad blockers are open to stop blocking ads. A majority of smartphone users are aware that ad blocking software exists, but haven’t used any. Just 18% of mobile device users are not aware of ad blockers. The IAB research offered some tips on how to win back users, e.g.  safeguarding users from ads that are infected with malware/viruses.

The best APAC digital marketing stats from July 2016

Monthly roundup of digital marketing stats from the APAC region consists of stats from plenty of sources. eMarketer predicts digital travel sales in APAC to exceed those in North America in 2017. APAC is expected to spend $216bn (up 21%), North America only $200bn. A GfK study shows 83% of online users across eight APAC markets access the internet via smartphone every day. In China this figure is 93%.

Get ready to start seeing videos on LinkedIn

The company announced Tuesday morning that it will now let its 500 “Influencers” start posting 30-second video clips to the professional social network. These videos will appear in the main LinkedIn feed, among the shared articles, network updates, and job postings, and anyone will be able to comment on them, like them, or share them. The videos have to be pre-recorded versus streamed live and the feature will launch without any video ads.

Digital video platforms are drawing ever-increasing numbers of viewers

According to ZenithOptimedia’s “Online Video Forecasts,” daily time spent with video on mobile devices will overtake time spent with that activity on computers and other nonmobile devices in 2016, at 30.4 minutes and 27.3 minutes, respectively. GlobalWebIndex, at least three-quarters of internet users in every region worldwide used YouTube in the month leading up to Q3 2015 polling, with this share rising to 93% in Latin America.

Mobile accounted for 96 per cent of total internet growth in Q1 of this year. Mobile continued growth is driven by confident forecast of mobile as an advertising channel (e.g. 71 per cent of internet consumption will be via mobile); guaranteed engagement (investing in social media platforms – consumers are active on these sites every day, native in-app advertising, relevant programmatic advertising content); branded games.

China’s biggest brand on its plans to conquer the West

Tencent is China’s biggest brand with more than 1 billion monthly users, revenues of almost £12bn. last year and the most valuable brand in the country, worth £85bn. Tencent wants to be known outside China and is making a big push in this area, particularly with WeChat and its gaming platform. Tencent also needs to find new ways to grow its revenues as China’s economy slows. It slipped to 6.7% in the first quarter of 2016.
